Free CFA Level 1 Mock Tests: Where to Find Quality Practice

Mock tests are the single highest-ROI activity in CFA Level 1 prep. But not all mocks are equal: a poorly written mock teaches you the wrong patterns. Here's where to find free mocks worth your time, and how to tell quality from noise.

01What makes a mock “quality”?

Three things matter: curriculum alignment (does it match 2027 topic weights?), question quality (are the distractors plausible, not trick questions?), and exam simulation (135-minute sessions, proper interface, no pauses).

A mock that gives you 50 Ethics questions and 5 Quant questions is worse than useless: it trains the wrong instincts. The real L1 exam has fixed topic weights; your mocks should mirror them.

02Where to find free mocks

CFA Institute Learning Ecosystem: One free mock per level for registered candidates. The gold standard for format, but only one.

Provider sample mocks: Wiley, Kaplan, and UWorld offer 1-2 free sample mocks as lead magnets. Good for variety, but limited.

03How to use mocks effectively

Don't just take mocks: review every wrong answer and log the topic. After 3-4 mocks, your weakness pattern emerges. That's where the real gains are: fixing your bottom 3 topics is worth more than re-doing your top 3.

Take mocks under real conditions: 135 minutes, no phone, no pauses. Your brain needs to practice the endurance, not just the content.
